Life has a way of teaching us through challenges and, sometimes, it leads us to unexpected places when we’re most in need. My journey to Pilates began at a point when my life felt like it was unraveling. I was a mother juggling the immense responsibilities of caring for twin toddlers, a five-year-old daughter, and a 16-year-old son who had just been diagnosed with Friedrich’s Ataxia—a devastating, terminal neuromuscular disease. On top of this, I was working over 50 hours a week as an administrator in a spine clinic.
Exhaustion had become my norm, and my body bore the brunt of this relentless pace. Despite always being active, the long hours spent at a desk had taken a toll on my posture and overall health. I knew I couldn’t sustain this lifestyle and still care for myself and my family. I needed a change.
It was during my first Pilates session that I discovered something transformative. Lying on the reformer, I felt supported in a way I hadn’t experienced in years. The tension in my body was cradled by the springs of the reformer, giving me space to move and breathe freely. For the first time in a long time, I felt a sense of relief and permission to focus solely on myself. Pilates was my moving meditation.
Pilates quickly grew from a practice into a passion. I started to wonder, “Could I teach this?” I thought about the patients at the spine clinic—many of whom suffered from pain yet were not surgical candidates. Could Pilates be the answer for them too?
My curiosity didn’t end there. As a mother, I was desperate to find something that could help my son as his condition progressed. This led me to research Pilates training programs more deeply. In a leap of faith, I left my job at the clinic and, without looking back, started Classical Pilates instructor training just two days later. That decision in 2016 marked the beginning of ARC Pilates.
